SWTOR Knights of the Eternal Throne

BioWare has revealed the latest expansion for their MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic - Knights of the Eternal Throne.

There is little to go on regarding the details of the new expansion, other than the announcement of the expansion at Star Wars Celebration in London by BioWare director of design James Ohlen. Ohlen promises "more of BioWare’s trademark cinematic storytelling, as well as exciting new game features.”

It is currently unknown when Eternal Throne, or KOTET, will see a launch, as the previous expansion, the episodic Knights of the Fallen Empire, is still seeing content released. The 16th and possibly final chapter, The Battle of Odesson, will go live on August 11th.

In addition to the announcement, SWTOR is also preparing to celebrate it's 5 year anniversary, and BioWare has prepared a blog post to the fanbase with a short video commemorating the entire experience working on the game. BioWare also revealed some statistics about the playerbase; over 87 million characters have been created, with the Sith edging out the Republic by a little over a million characters. The Jedi Knight and Sith Warriors are the most popular classes for each side. In total, players have spent about 1.5 billion hours playing the game.

Quick Take

SWTOR has come a long way in the past five years. A lot of folks have written it off as a failure, but it has a stable enough player-base for BioWare and EA to keep releasing content for it, especially if you consider the fact that the game is the last piece of the old continuity still going, as Disney has reset the canon since buying the franchise.

For me, it's one of the few MMO's to keep my interest to the very end, so in that respect, I'd say it's been worth it. Knights of the Fallen Empire is by all accounts some of the best content released for any MMO in recent memory as well, including World of Warcraft, and hopefully Knights of the Eternal Throne follows suit when it is released.
