Fans of SaGa Frontier and Romancing SaGa have something to look forward to -- a new SaGa game is in development and is expected to be officially announced in 2022.

As far as JRPG franchises go, the SaGa series is somewhat neglected in the West. We've gotten a handful of games such as an English translation of Romancing SaGa 2 for the PS Vita and SaGa Scarlet, but it doesn't have quite the same level of popularity as other titles Square Enix announced earlier this year.

The SaGa franchise as a whole can be thought of as a spiritual successor to the open-world gameplay of Final Fantasy 2. A dozen games have been launched since 1992's Romancing SaGa, but most players are likely familiar with the PS1 release SaGA Frontier as that was the first game in the franchise to get a true worldwide release. Since then, the franchise has built a small but dedicated following -- and now a new title is slated to be announced next year.

What We Know About the New SaGa Game

Unfortunately, we don't know much about the new SaGa game other than the fact that it's expected to be announced sometime next year.

"We’re still in development on the [new SaGa game] and hope to announce it sometime next year, so please look forward to it!" producer Hiroyuki Miura said during the SaGa Series Official Broadcast: Producers Talk 2021 livestream event (via Gematsu and Reddit).

"Both Miura and myself are working on the next package title, so please look forward to more of the SaGa series next year," added SaGa series general director Hiroyuki Miura. (It should be noted that "package title" refers to a physical release in this context.)

There's still a lot we don't know. WIth the early 2021 release of SaGa Frontier Remastered on Steam, it's certainly possible that one of the older games will get some kind of remake. That said, there hasn't been a core, non-mobile release since 2017's SaGa: Scarlet Grace, so this franchise is certainly due for a new, modern game. We're sure to find out more when the devs are ready for an official reveal.
