A new Need for Speed game will arrive by the end of 2017, and much to the delight of fans of the series, players will have the option to play through the entire game offline. This announcement came from a post on the Need for Speed website from Ghost Games, which is the studio developing the game.

Why is it so special that the upcoming Need for Speed game has a single player offline option? Well, 2015's Need for Speed, which was also developed by Ghost Games, did not have this option. The reboot required a constant internet connection, which frustrated many fans who wanted to play the game solo. The always-online feature also prevented players from pausing the game, leading to even more frustration. The 2015 Need for Speed currently sits at a score of 66 on Metacritic.

It seems that Ghost Games took into consideration much of the feedback from fans after the release of the last Need for Speed. The studio wrote the following in its post:

Let’s finish on one of the biggest discussion points around the last game: always-online. To say that this is a topic you're passionate about would be an understatement, and whenever there’s a topic that gathers as much attention and feedback from you as this did, we take note.

So, when release day rolls around for the next Need for Speed, you will be able to play through a single player experience completely offline. Before you ask, and we know you will, this does mean you will be able to pause the game.

Besides the addition of an offline mode, Ghost Games did not reveal much more about the game, which still doesn't even have a title. The studio wrote that features like car customization and cop chases will return for the upcoming game, but revealed little else. However, the post states that more details will be shared as we get closer to EA PLAY and E3 in June.

The next Need for Speed is planned for release sometime by the end of 2017. While we don't yet know what platforms it will be available on, the 2015 Need for Speed was available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Origin.
