I don't know about you, but I grew up reading Dr. Seuss. I read dozens of his books in my younger years (or rather, my mom read many of them to me) and he was a fundamental part of teaching me to read. Now, a whole new generation is going to enjoy his work in a new Dr. Seuss app through the power of augmented reality.

Yes, you read that right: augmented reality. A brand new app called Dr. Seuss's ABC - An Amazing AR Alphabet! has been launched by Dr. Seuss Digital Studios. This unique experience lets kids play with classic characters — and learn while they're doing it.

There are three distinct modes in this Dr. Seuss app:

  • Story Mode - players go through the alphabet in order, one letter at a time. They must draw each letter as they go along and will be joined by colorful characters in augmented reality.
  • A to Z - This is a sort of "Chapter Select" option that lets kids skip ahead to different sections of the app. There's fun narration to go along with each chapter like the Hen in the Hat and the Fiffer-feffer-feff.
  • Sandbox - If kids are more interested in playing than learning (I sure was), they can instead jump into this mode and play with various characters from the doc's many franchises. Animated characters can be selected from a list and placed anywhere in the room using augmented reality.

These kids sure are lucky. I had to use my imagination to see cartoon characters in my room.
