Back in 2017, Square Enix announced it would bring a new mobile game based on Final Fantasy XV to China. Some new details regarding that game have emerged.
According to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, the new game will be a joint project between Square Enix and two other studios, both Chinese. Oriental Pearl is a Shanghai-based company specializing in media and gaming. It's already embarked on two joint ventures with Sony in China. The other company is Gaea Entertainment, a developer known for mobile games like Ace of Arenas and Middle Earth Era. The three companies will work together to produce whatever the Final Fantasy XV mobile game will be. Here's hoping for the long-awaited Final Fantasy XV MOBA spinoff.
Square Enix's new project will apparently be built on Unreal Engine 4. Final Fantasy XV itself uses an in-house proprietary engine called Luminous Studio. Apparently, Square Enix is planning to release its new FFXV mobile game in 2019. Remember, we still don't know exactly what this game is. It's unlikely to be a port, but if Ahmad is correct then the game isn't just a new version of Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition either. We'll just have to wait and see what Square Enix says about the game in the near future. If it's gunning for a 2019 release then the studio will probably need to divulge something soon.
Final Fantasy XV was released for PS4 and Xbox One back in 2016 after a lengthy development cycle. Since release, Square Enix has continually updated the game and added new DLC. An abridged version of the game titled Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition was released for mobile devices, consoles, and PCs in 2018. You can check out what we thought of the original game right here.
