The Factorio expansion is still in the works and Wube Software has some new details to share about the new content that is coming to the popular base building game.

As the name implies, Factorio is a game about building a factory. The game sold over a million copies in Steam Early Access and launched version 1.0 back in 2020. Since then, the devs have launched the hefty 1.1 update and announced an expansion.

That planned expansion was first announced over a year ago. At the time, Wube Software said that it didn't think it would take less than a year to develop; now, the devs have cheekily explained that this assessment was technically correct in today's progress update (via Reddit) -- the expansion is still very much in the works.

Wube Software has outlined a 7-step plan for developing the expansion and explained the logistical challenges involved. This expansion will include an overhaul to the game's base engine, so it's unlikely that an experimental version of the code will be launched. In short, the expansion will launch when it's completely finished, albeit after a short beta test with a small pool of hand-picked players.

The Factorio expansion will coincide with the launch of the 1.2 update. Interestingly, the expansion will effectively be treated like a mod, allowing players to turn it on or off at the flip of a switch without having any major effects on the game. As a bonus, many quality-of-life improvements and other planned features will be included in the 1.2 update for all players -- essentially, the expansion will be focused on new content and mechanics while the base game will get updated with new features regardless of whether or not you buy it.

Unfortunately, Wube Software isn't ready to explain the actual content of the expansion just yet -- it's not even willing to reveal the name for the expansion. That said, today's development update shows that it has a plan in place; hopefully, we won't have to wait too much longer to actually play it.

When is the Factorio Expansion Release Date?

The Factorio expansion release date will likely be sometime in 2022; a more specific release date has not yet been announced. The launch of the expansion will coincide with the Factorio 1.2 update.

There is one concrete detail that we do know: the expansion will be priced at $30.00, just like the base game. Wube Software promises to "put in enough content to make it well worth the price." For now, there's still plenty of fun to be had in the base game -- you can buy Factorio via its official website for $30.00 or your regional equivalent.
