Spike Chunsoft revealed new details about New Dangonronpa V3: Everyone’s New Semester of Killing on the official website. An article from Gematsu presents the translated information from Danganronpa's website.

Expect a similar formula of moment-to-moment gameplay in the latest addition of the series. The previous primary Dangonronpa games consist of the evil teddy bear Monokuma locking gifted high school students in a university. A student may only leave if they kill another student and get away with it. After three people find a body a class investigation begins, followed by a trial. If the student that commits the murder is not found guilty, then they are free to leave the university while the other students are killed.

The developers aren’t changing much in the newest game. The premise remains the same but the students are quite literally prisoners this time around. The first game took place in a high school, and the second one a tropical island. Well, the third one offers a prison aesthetic.

The new post also briefly explained world some building information. The gifted students are granted suffrage, subsidies from the government, and eligibility to run for office.

New Dangonranpa V3 breaks the gameplay into three parts like previous games. The first part is daily life. In between class trials players experience day to day life in the prison. Here the students are free to explore the building and socialize with their peers. Here the game takes aspects of dating sims and applies it to the insane setting. Players can become friends with the other students or create relationships with them.

Once a student finds a body the investigation phase begins. This part involves reviewing the crime scene for clues and questioning the other students. When players find enough clues, the class trial begins.

In the final phase of the gameplay loop, all students gather for a class trial. Here the player presents evidence and puts the pieces of the murder together. Players must reveal the information at an appropriate time in a rhythm based trial.

Spike Chunsoft isn’t looking to redefine the series but further refine it instead. Moment-to-moment gameplay seems the same from previous games.

An international release for the latest Danganronpa V3 has yet to be announced, but it launches in Japan on January 12 on PS4 and PS Vita. The uninitiated can catch up on the series with the Vita games or the upcoming port, Danganronpa 1&2 Reloaded, on the PS4 in early 2017. The first two games are also available on Steam.

Quick Take:

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” It’s a cliché but holds true in the Danganronpa series. The game’s formula is unique and entertaining, so I don’t see a reason to make huge changes to the gameplay.
