Hot on the heels of the Persia reveal a couple days ago comes the reveal of the second new faction coming to Sid Meier's Civilization VI as part of the upcoming Spring Update. This time around we're given a little preview of the Macedonian empire led by none other than Alexander the Great.

Alexander more than earned his title over the course of his reign. Not content with staying in his native Greece, Alexander’s wanderlust started a military campaign through vast swaths of the Old World, eventually leading him to the “End of the World”: India. Alexander and his armies were never defeated in battle thanks to Alexander’s fierce will and keen military mind. Despite all the dangers he’s put himself in during his career as a military commander, Alexander passed away in the city of Babylon of old age.
Unique Ability: Hellenistic Fusion
Cities conquered by Macedon get bonuses towards every district present in it.
Unique Unit: Hypaspist
These warriors were equipped with large shields and spears and were typically used as squires by Macedon nobility. These units, not all too dissimilar from Hoplites, were usually used for flanking the enemy, attacking them where they’re exposed. In Civilization VI, Hypaspists replace the swordsman and get more combat bonuses if they’re besieging districts.
Unique Building: Basilikoi Paides
This unique building replaces the barracks and generates bonus science when you train military units, with additional bonuses available for training specific military units.
Leader Ability: To the World’s End
Due to Macedon’s considerable military proficiency, the civ under Alexander the Great will get less war weariness in times of strife, allowing you to push the attack a little more than other civs can.
Leader Unit: Hetairoi
These mounted soldiers were the elite cavalry of the Macedonian army. While predating Alexander the Great’s rule by a wide margin, these units cemented themselves in Macedon folklore under Alexander’s tutelage. In Civilization VI, these units replace the Horsemen and level up quicker in addition to being faster than the Horsemen it replaces.
The Macedon civ as well as the Persian civ will be releasing soon. How soon, though, is for Firaxis to know and for us to guess.
