We've known about a new Bungie IP for a while now and a new job posting has revealed a bit more info: it's going to have a team-based, competitive PvP focus that could pave the way for esports.

Bungie is best known as the creator of the massively popular Halo franchise, but it eventually moved on to making Destiny. Since then, Bungie has effectively been a one-trick pony with its focus on maintaining and growing Destiny 2 over the last few years. The company is making the smart move by diversifying its portfolio of games, and now it looks like it might be moving into the esports arena, too.

Why the New Bungie IP Might Be an Esport

The new Bungie IP is definitely going to have a competitive PvP focus, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to be an esport. That said, a new job listing discovered by DestinyNews+ on Twitter indicates that the Destiny 2 developer's upcoming game would be well-positioned for the esports space. Check it out:

Are you on a mission to create games that bond players together into deeply invested communities? Do you spend your time deconstructing the latest PvP games to understand how they work? Do you analyze how teamplay dynamics are affected by everything from moment-to-moment abilities to high-level macro objectives? Are you excited to design game systems that allow for interesting strategic decisions, multiple vectors of player learning, and the depth to support hundreds of hours of gameplay?

As a Multiplayer Systems Designer, you will work with a team to prototype different game ideas on the path to production. Most importantly, you will work with a fun, dedicated, and passionate cross-discipline team devoted to turning a creative dream into a new franchise at Bungie.

The description of what's required for this job clearly paints a picture of a competitive, team-based PvP game. That's not to say that will be the sole focus of the game, mind; after all, Overwatch 2 will likely continue to have an esports scene despite having a larger PvP focus compared to Overwatch.

The most interesting bit about esports, however, is in the "Required Skills" section:

  • Strong familiarity with global gaming markets and the competitive gaming/esports landscape

So, is the new Bungie IP going to be an esport? We can't say for certain either way, but it looks like it could be a good fit for esports.

Sadly, we aren't likely to learn more details about this upcoming game for some time. For now, there's still plenty of fun to be had in Destiny 2 — especially with the return of the Guardian Games.

Do you think this mysterious new Bungie IP would have a shot as an esport? What's your favorite team-based, competitive PvP game on the market right now? Let us know in the comments below!
