Neo: The World Ends With You

Square Enix has released a boatload of new information for Neo: The World Ends With You. They've introduced the Shinjuku Reapers, game missions, Mental Notes, Social Network, Dive game mechanics, battle basics, combos, and mashups, and (gasp) three new pins. Whoaaaa! Jokes aside, let's get into it, shall we?

What's new with Neo: The World Ends With You?

The Shinjuku Reapers manage the Game and give missions to its Players. The current incarnation of the game is being run by a Gang of Reapers who first arrived in Shibuya around 3 years ago. With his new version comes new rules, and one of the most important is that Players now have to group up into teams in order to participate.

There are a "wide variety of missions" that players can undertake in the Game. The objectives change from day to day, so one day you can be fighting a turf war with another team, and the day after that you could be going full Scooby Doo by going around the town solving mysterious. Zoiks!

Mental Notes are basically an in-game tab where you can read the game progress and mission details. If you're not sure where to go or what to do, read your Mental Notes.

The Social Network tab hold information on everyone that you'll be meeting. If you fulfill certain criteria you'll unlock rewards, which includes items and abilities. It's essentially a relationship chart that will continue to grow as you progress through the story.

The Dive game mechanic has the character Nagi entering people's minds. You can use it to "fight and exterminate the Noise within and bring the afflicted folks back to their senses." I'm not exactly sure what that means, but it sounds fairly interesting at least.

Battle Basics are moves that can be unleashed depending on what kind of pins that have been equipped. You press the button that corresponds to the given pin, and the character will perform the attack. Pretty simple, eh? You can also string together combos or perform simultaneous attacks if you're feeling bold.

This leads nicely into combos and mashups, which occurs when you coordinate your team's attacks and then unleash a Mashup. In doing so, you inflict a massive amount of damage on your enemies.

The first newly introduced pin is the Sugar Beam, which is a ranged psych that shoots a barrage of eight bullets, with the last one being a piercing shot. The second new pin is the Grin Reaper, which uses massive fists to pummel the Noise. If you hit the button repeatedly you'll trigger high-speed punches. The last new pin is the Marvelous Crash, which can be used to summon a giant boulder onto someone's head, which will definitely ruin their day, you jerk.

Thanks, Gematsu.

Neo: The World Ends With You will release on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on July 27, 2021, and the Epic Game Store on PC sometime this year.
