Sword Coast Legends Preview

N-Space, a game development company originally founded in 1994 has sadly closed its door this past week. Over their lifetime they managed to work on a wide variety of platforms, but mostly focused on porting titles to Nintendo handhelds. Some well known titles of that they helped port include the 2012 title Heroes of Ruin for the Nintendo 3DS, and more recently they created their first game internally, Sword Coast Legends. The last title is a RPG based in the Forgotten Realm campaign of Dungeons and Dragons.

Word first came out that the company was shutting down when artist Ben Leary tweeted the following message and image:

This tweet was then backed up by a statement released by the publisher of Sword Coast Legends Digital Extremes:

We are deeply saddened by the closing of n-Space. Staying alive as a mid-sized independent developer in the games industry is no small feat. Their passion for creating games never faltered and their dedicated team has ended on the high note of completing the console version of Sword Coast Legends. We are working hard with them to realize as much as we can for their team during this difficult time and encourage players to keep an eye on the official website for more details on the launch of Sword Coast Legends on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Thoughts as the moment as to the closing of the studio is of the poor sales of Sword Coast Legends with Steam Spy showing that the game sold 108k copies, but due to the game also having a free weekend chances are they sold under 100k copies. Even after the games initial release while some players enjoyed the title many weren't pleased expecting a different experience then what was provided based on the information available about the game heading up to release. 10 days after the release Dan Tudge, the game's director, released a post on the Sword Coast Legends website appealing to those players explaining that they hear the complaints and were attempting to work on them. This led to the creation of the community patches based on addressing those concerns, with the first two released, and the third scheduled for December before being pushed back until the free expansion Rage of Demons was released. The news of n-Space closing down is also hot on the heels of DLC that was just about to head into closed beta. If Digital Extremes does not support the game then it will become unplayable due to needing a SCL account unless modders are able to change it, or Digital Extremes unties it from the SCL accounts.

We have reached out to both Digital Extremes and n-Space on the status of the DLC (and in theory Community Patch 3) as well as the planned console releases. Digital Extremes told us that they are planning on sharing more details on both soon while n-Space has yet to reply.

What do you think on the abrupt closure of n-Space? Have you tried Sword Coast Legends? Let us know in the comments below!
