At GenCon 2015 we spoke with Jeremy Handel of Handelabra games, who was very excited about the (upcoming) release of online multiplayer for Sentinels of The Multiverse.
Owners of the Steam version of the game can now access the online mutliplayer beta by following the steps outlined below.
To participate, all you need is to own a copy of the game on Steam. To access the Multiplayer Public Beta, do the following:
- Quit and restart Steam, then open the Library tab.
- Right-click on Sentinels of the Multiverse and select Properties.
- Click the BETAS tab and choose “mpbeta - Multiplayer Public Beta” from the dropdown list.
- Steam will update the game automatically.
You can switch back to the non-beta version of the game at any time. To restore the regular version of the game, do the following:
- Right-click on Sentinels of the Multiverse and select Properties.
- Click the BETAS tab and choose “NONE - Opt out of all beta programs” from the dropdown list.
- Steam will update the game automatically.
According to the game's official forums, this public beta is currently being considered part of the development process of the game and should not be considered a finished feature at this point. Owners of the game can currently use the existing expansion content in online games and the person who creates the game can decide which content will be available when they create the game. If expansion content is chosen though, only players who already own that content will be able to join that game.
People who own the game outside of Steam, on iOS or Android, should keep an eye out for multiplayer to come to these versions of the game sometime this fall.
Quick Take
Online Multiplayer was the only thing that I felt was missing from the digital version of Sentinels of the Multiverse. Now is a great time to get the game if you were on the fence before or waiting for online multiplayer to become available. I really enjoy the physical card game and this addition to the digital version of the game puts in on par, if not potentially slightly surpassing the physical version for me as now I don't even need to gather my friends in one place to play with them.
