Mortal Kombat 1 Debut Gameplay Trailer

Following its announcement several weeks ago, NetherRealm Studio's Mortal Kombat 1 takes center stage at the Summer Game Fest with a full-length look at what players can expect when they get their hands on it later this year. The trailer shows off several familiar characters along with a confirmation that it does take place in modern times. We're also given a look at the new Kameo Fighter system including Jax, Goro, Kano, Stryker, and old Kung Lao, along with some of the exceptionally brutal and violent Fatalities players will be able to pull off by finishing opponents. On top of that, Mortal Kombat fans are given a glimpse at the game's story - Liu Kang has restarted history by creating a New Era for ther sake of peace, while Mileena has been infected by a lethal disease. Scorpion and Sub-Zero fight for the future of their clan whilst the Earthrealm champions Raiden and Kung Lao fight for family. Johnny Cage is here too and he's more concerned about staying relevant with his fans and fights for vanity.

Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon was on stage to tell us more about the game. He says the game is being called Mortal Kombat 1 because of the events at the end of Mortal Kombat 11 that created a new timeless. It's essentially a reboot using the characters in different ways. Normally in a fighting game you'll select from a roster but in Mortal Kombat 1 you'll select from a second roster as well to insert your kameo fighters and customize the team to your choosing. So you'll have a main fighter and a kameo fighter that can be summoned with one button. There's a meter up on top that tells you when you can summon them to help you during fights. Some of the main characters will also be available as kameos, such as Sub-Zero and Scorpion. Boon says there's a lot of digging into the older Mortal Kombat games.

This summer, players can expect to see more characters and more reveals in the lead up to launch on September 19. Mortal Kombat 1 will also be teaming up for a collaboration with Grammy-nominated artist Zhu with details forthcoming. Check out the full gore-filled gameplay trailer below.
