In an unexpected but not at all unwelcome turn of events, Koei Tecmo has announced Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX, a bundled collection of the first two Monster Rancher titles to celebrate the series' 25th anniversary. Originally the series was released with the original Monster Rancher in 1997, and Monster Rancher 2 in 1999. Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX will be released on December 9, 2021 on Nintendo Switch, Windows PC via Steam, iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch via the App Store.
What is Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX?
It's pretty much as it sounds: player raise their own monsters that they train and later compete against other strange creatures in combat and tournaments. There are hundreds of different monster types that have their own skills and abilities, and apparently "every Rancher will be able to raise and train monsters that are a perfect fit for their personality and play style", which is a bold claim but I'll allow it. This is the series where you could insert CD's and DVD's in your gaming system and use them to "unlock" different monsters after all, so it wouldn't be the strangest thing this series has ever done.
If you want to check out what this series is all about, the trailer is below:
The collection will also include things that were never in the original western release such as additional save slots, Freeze slots, and Monster Hall of Fame slots. New features have also been added to Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX specifically, which is nice. These include a memo feature to use while raising your monsters, random battle rankings, and a fast forward mode.
Instead of inserting a CD into your drive to get different monsters, instead players will be able to search through a database to find " their desired CD and generate a monster from its data". Basically, you'll be searching from a database of songs from across the world. When you find your favorite song, choose it and see what monster you get. Neat.
