Monster Hunter: World released in January to critical and commercial success. Many have championed the game for being both a great jumping on point for newcomers and a rewarding experience for veteran players. It seems this approach has paid off as Capcom has announced that Monster Hunter: World is their best-selling game of all time. It has beaten Resident Evil 5 to claim the top spot, which sold a total of 7.3 million units. Capcom detailed the game's sales in a press release, stating that the game has shipped 7.5 million units worldwide. Of course, shipped and sold are two separate things, something which Capcom makes light of in the press release:

"Monster Hunter: World has overcome both linguistic and cultural barriers to delight approximately 7 million players worldwide, and has shipped 7.5 million units"

This news follows last month's update that Monster Hunter: World had sold 6 million units since launch, showing that it has kept up a good pace. The game has benefited from being the first in the series to have a simultaneous global release. It is also the first entry in nine years to be available on a home console, releasing exclusively on handheld devices in recent years. In the press release, Capcom gives some context as to how the sales of Monster Hunter: World stack up when compared to the series as a whole:

"Since the first Monster Hunter title made its debut 14 years ago in 2004, the series has attracted a dedicated fan base, and overall grown into a mega-hit with cumulative sales of more than 48 million units worldwide as of March 5, 2018."

Monster Hunter: World brings the kill, loot, craft, and kill again loop the series is known for to home consoles this time around. With 14 weapons to master and the return of elemental damage, the game boasts the same tactical depth as previous iterations. The jump to home consoles brings with it fully HD graphics, larger environments to hunt in and more detailed and dynamic monsters. You can check out our thoughts on the game here.
