Scrolls, the digital collectible card game published & developed by Mojang, will be closing down for good on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, according to an announcement on the game's official website.

While there are quite a few digital CCGs out there today, Scrolls was originally announced to the world in March 2011. (That's two years before Hearthstone was announced for you card fanatics out there.) Gameplay was a mix of a card game and a strategy game - you deployed your characters onto five lanes in an attempt to destroy three of the enemy's five idols while protecting your own.

Development of Scrolls had come to a halt in June of 2015. Any proceeds that were being earned by the game were put towards keeping the servers online. At the time of this announcement, the servers were planned to stay online until at least July 1, 2016. It seems that even a Mojang game not in development anymore has enough staying power to hang on for an extra year and a half past its closure date.

Despite the staying power of Scrolls, the time has come for the game to close down forever. Here's how things are going to go down:

  • February 9, 2018: Mojang developers will be out and about in the game for a few hours starting at 9:00 AM Eastern Time.
  • February 11, 2018: A community tournament will take place starting at 12:00 PM Eastern - you can find more details about the tournament over at the game's subreddit.
  • February 13, 2018: The game's official servers shut down for good.
The closure of the official servers doesn't necessarily mean the end of the game - Mojang is working to see if they can update the game's client to work with a community-run server. This would open up the possibilities of modifying cards based on server rules and even introducing new cards altogether. As cool as that might be, the devs can't promise that they'll be able to come through on this one. If you haven't yet had the chance to play Scrolls, you've got just a few days left to get some games in.
