It's been an excruciating 6 or so years for the fans of EA's parkour-inspired post-cyberpunk first-person platformer Mirror's Edge, but that wait is nearly, finally, over! The follow-up to the game got the title Mirror's Edge Catalyst with the striking aesthetic and wonderful soundtrack was announced at 2013's E3 and sees players return to the city of Glass as the futuristic delivery girl Faith Connors.

While we still have some time to go until we can get stuck into yet another aesthetically pleasing mystery, we won't have to wait too long to get a tiny taste of what the sequel (which is kind of a prequel while also a reboot. It's complicated) has to offer. EA and DICE have announced a closed beta, and signups are open to the public as of right now. Why a singleplayer game needs a closed beta is anyone's guess at this point, but I don't think fans of the game will care too. The closed beta will be available to all who own a Playstation 4, an Xbox One and/or a PC. Sign up here to have a chance on playing a portion of the game early!

EA has also released a new in-engine (note: this is not gameplay but rather a show of what the engine is capable of producing) trailer that shows off a little more of the world and teases the story and its characters.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst is supposed to come out on May 24 for current-gen consoles and Microsoft Windows.

Quick Take

I have no idea why a beta is necessary for a game that is largely singleplayer. The original did have online time trials with leaderboards but that would hardly need a server test. I really don't mind since I am one of the people who has been waiting for what feels like an eternity to get their hands on a new game in this franchise. Maybe there's a new, as of yet unrevealed, multiplayer mode in the works to go with the game's open-world nature? Whatever it is, I'm just glad Solar Fields is coming back to do the soundtrack. Wouldn't be the same vibe without him.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
