Last week Mojang released Minecraft Classic as a free browser game as part of its 10th-anniversary celebrations. Microsoft and Mojang have announced today that the ultimate sandbox game has sold over 176 million copies worldwide, a number that is based on known game unit sales. They also announced that there are 200 million registered users in Minecraft China, which is a regional exclusive free-to-play version. Last month we also saw the original PC version of the game passing 30 million sales, a figure now surpassed by more than 300 thousand copies sold, which you can see in the game store. Microsoft has also announced Minecraft Earth today, and you can see the official reveal trailer below.
It's still up for debate whether Minecraft or Tetris is the best-selling video game in history. According to GamesIndustry.biz, the new figures released by Mojang and Microsoft technically put Minecraft as the best-selling game by unit sales ever released as per official numbers. However, The Tetris Company reported that it had 425 million paid mobile downloads in 2014, which would technically count as multiple games using the Tetris brand. Since Tetris doesn't release official sales numbers as a policy, according to a spokesperson, the numbers reported by other outlets have not been confirmed. The last unofficial sales number for Tetris was 170 million, but there's no confirmation on that number.
That hasn't stopped Wikipedia from placing Minecraft at the top of its comprehensive list of best-selling video games. The top three remain the same: Minecraft, Tetris, and Grand Theft Auto V are the undisputed champions that managed to break the 100 million copies milestone.
In other news, earlier this month the Call of Duty franchise has achieved the milestone of 300 million games sold, as we reported, but that would be spread out over all 15 games in the franchise since the original Call of Duty from 2004.
What do you think about these sales figures? Is Minecraft now the best-selling video game of all time, or is Tetris still the uncontested king of gaming? Let us know in the comments below!
