We'll be making a return to Kattelox island on our Playstation 3's and Playstation Vita very soon, as Capcom (via an employee blog) has officially announced that Mega Man Legends is coming to both of them! While details are scarce, the game will be a re-release, and not a re-mastered version, to be released on the North American Playstation Store.
Mega Man Legends was originally released on the Playstation 1 in late 1997, offering a bold new look at the Mega Man franchise as it stepped away from the side-scrolling platformer of the past. Legends was a slower pace than its predecessors, focusing more on dungeon exploration, doing quests for the townsfolk, and upgrading your weapons. As the first 3D polygonal Mega Man game, the game allowed players to experience the world in a new way, and the nature of the game allowed for the plot to be revealed through cut scenes.
While it would seem that Capcom is no longer interested in continuing the Mega Man franchise, cancelling Mega Man Legends 3, co-creator Keiji Inafune and his development company Comcept are working to create a spiritual successor of the Legends series. The project, titled Red Ash, has run into some controversy as of late in regards to its failed Kickstarter Campaign after announcing that they had found a publisher towards the end of the campaign.
At this time there's no word on Mega Man Legends 2 being released, but for those wanting a Mega Man Legends experience, there isn't long to wait. At only $9.99 Mega Man Legends will be available on September 29th via the North american Playstation Store for Playstation 3 and PS Vita.Capcom did note that the title will not work on the Playstation Portable (PSP), and it does not appear it will be available on Playstation 4.
Personally, I can't wait to play Mega Man Legends on my Vita, because it's easily one of my favorite Playstation Classic titles. While still disappointed that there will be no Mega Man Legends 3, the possibility of Mega Man Legends 2 being brought over as well should tide me over until we know more about Red Ash's development.
How about you? Are you excited for this announcement? What are your favorite Mega Man Legends memories?
