Former Unsung Story scenario planner Yasumi Matsuno has shared his thoughts on the upcoming Little Orbit version of the game, which is due to enter Early Access for Kickstarter backers in the coming days. Matsuno is no longer involved with the project, but took to Twitter to discuss his thoughts nonetheless.

What does Yasumi Matsuno think of the new Unsung Story?

Speaking via Twitter, Matsuno shared his thoughts regarding Unsung Story, which - after a troubled development history - is now being worked on by APB Reloaded developer Little Orbit. Matsuno's thread is, of course, entirely in Japanese, but Ori and the Will of the Wisps writer Alexander O. Smith (who was, at one point, attached to Unsung Story) has translated Matsuno's comments.

According to Smith's translation, Matsuno says he was contacted by new developer Little Orbit, who took over Unsung Story in 2017. Little Orbit told Matsuno that their vision for the game was "very much based on (or inspired by) [his] design and storyline", but they haven't told him exactly which of his ideas they've used in their version. Matsuno says he looks forward to "enjoying it with the same fresh eye as any other gamer."

The history behind Unsung Story

Unsung Story is one of the most notorious Kickstarter projects in the gaming world. The Kickstarter campaign for the game originally began back in 2014, billing it as a spiritual successor to Yasumi Matsuno's Final Fantasy Tactics. However, Matsuno stepped away from the project when it became clear the original development team, Playdek, wanted to create "a Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics clone".

In February 2016, developer Playdek announced that development on Unsung Story would cease due to a lack of resources, but in early 2017, Playdek revealed that Little Orbit would take over the project. Yesterday, Little Orbit announced that the Steam page for Unsung Story was live, that a new trailer had been released, and that the studio had created an approved build for backers to try out, which would be emailed to all backers "who had a copy of the game as a reward in their tier". It seems there's now a pretty good chance this story will be sung after all.
