The upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man is shaping up to be one of the major PlayStation 4 releases of 2018, and it looks like players won’t be playing only as Peter Parker throughout the course of the game. In a PlayStation Blog post by Bryan Intihar, creative director at Insomniac Games, he confirmed that longtime love interest Mary Jane Watson will also be playable at certain points in the story.

This information comes in light of a new story-oriented trailer released during Paris Games Week, which was explained further in the blog post. The game is looking to be as much about Spider-Man as it is about the man behind the mask. It will explore Peter’s ability to juggle being a witty, web-slinging superhero and being a normal, rent-paying New Yorker with friends and family.

“In the past, we’ve talked a lot about how the best Spider-Man stories happen when Spider-Man and Peter Parker’s worlds collide,” Intihar writes. “So to understand Peter’s world a bit, players will also play as Peter during parts of the game.”
MJ, who at this point is a reporter at The Daily Bugle, plays the investigative role as she tracks down suspicious activity around the city. She’ll be a playable character during “key moments,” likely to help build the story. The extent of her involvement in the game has yet to be determined.

As mentioned previously, the trailer released on Monday is the most story-focused one we’ve seen. Spidey’s main enemy this time around is Mr. Negative, who also happens to be the philanthropist that Aunt May works for. There are glimpses of MJ trying to figure out something called Devil’s Breath, and some shots show her in a bank working with Spider-Man to stop a robbery.

Insomniac plans on hosting a Q&A livestream on Friday, 2 p.m. Pacific, where they’ll also take a closer look at the trailer. Marvel’s Spider-Man is set to release some time in 2018.
