We wants it, we needs it. Must have the precious.
The Lord of the Rings is a pretty immensely popular property in the world of video games. Back in the day, the PS2 era got a whole bunch of movie tie-in games, some of which were pretty excellent, as well as various spin-offs and adaptations over the years. With Amazon planning on releasing a new tv series based on the famous series, it seems like Daedalic is stepping up to take a bite of the action as well with The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is going to be an action-adventure game which follows the years of the characters life after he got his grubby hands on the one ring but before the movies and books pick up. "We have the story that we all know from the book, but everything that happens to him before he appears in the book are the main things we will see in our game," said Daedalic CEO Carsten Fichtelmann to the Hollywood Reporter. "We will tell the story before he first appears in the books."
The game is slated for a 2021 release, around the same time as the Amazon series, and is only the first game to come out of the partnership between Middle-Earth and Daedalic. The developers have made it clear that their focus is going to be on narrative-driven games and not on attempting to achieve a high level of graphical fidelity. This comes after comments that Middle-Earth may have been less than happy with the action-oriented games which have been the only style of The Lord of the Rings games released over the past few years.
