Hinterland has revealed some more information about the upcoming fourth episode of The Long Dark's Wintermute story mode. We now have a title and narrative setup for episode four, and Hinterland has promised a new The Long Dark roadmap after the episode's launch.
What do we know about The Long Dark Wintermute episode four?
The fourth episode of The Long Dark's Wintermute mode was originally slated to launch in 2020, but was delayed due to the pandemic. Now, in a new Steam developer diary, Hinterland has revealed that episode four will be titled "Fury, Then Silence". It'll continue the story of Wintermute, which we last checked in on back in 2019 with the launch of episode three, and will revolve around the capture of Mackenzie by a gang of violent convicts. Mackenzie must confront the gang, continue his long-running search for his ex-wife Astrid, and rescue the innocents caught in the crossfire. To commemorate the announcement, Hinterland also revealed the key art for Fury, Then Silence, which you can see below.
Hinterland promises that Fury, Then Silence will contain "7-10 hours of gameplay, 60 minutes of narrative cinematics, and over 40 minutes of new music". It'll be set in a new region, the primary feature of which is a prison complex built in the shadow of Blackrock Mountain (no, not that one). Episode four will also bring several new characters pivotal to the Wintermute narrative, and will set up episode five. If you're hoping for a launch date for that one, you're not likely to get one for a while, so you may want to temper your expectations.
When is The Long Dark Wintermute episode four release date?
True to form, Hinterland says that although the team is "heading into the final stretch" of episode four - localizing, optimizing, and preparing for launch - it's not quite there yet. As such, there won't be a release date announcement until launch is closer, so you'll have to stay tuned for more info on that. Hinterland does say it'll be adding the new Blackrock region to The Long Dark's survival mode "before the end of the year", so that's something to look forward to if that's your jam.
After episode four launches, Hinterland says it will release a roadmap for The Long Dark, promising information on episode five of Wintermute as well as new survival mode information and plans for mod support. Again, we're not likely to see that roadmap until a little while after episode four launches. The Long Dark is also getting a price increase; it's going from $29.99 to $34.99, a change that Hinterland believes more accurately reflects the current state of the game. Hopefully, Hinterland will reveal a Wintermute episode four release date soon. In the meantime, if last year's calendar is anything to go by, we could well be getting a Halloween event in The Long Dark this year, too, so stay tuned for a potential announcement about that.
