Square Enix officially announced the Life is Strange 2 Episode 3 release date, along with dates for Episode 4 and Episode 5. The third episode, entitled Wastelands, will release on May 9 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.
Wastelands continues where the last chapter left off, following Sean and Daniel Diaz’s road trip to Mexico. As they reach California, the brothers encounter a community of drifters living on the fringes of society.
With the introduction of many new characters into the mix, the episode sounds like it may be a turbulent one. Square Enix says that “the brothers are exposed to new experiences, encounter new friends and new challenges, and must confront much about themselves in the process. New relationships cause friction between the brothers and raise doubts about their unity. Can they stay together, or will their journey together end here?”
Dontnod has addressed the long development and release window between episodes, relative to the series’ first season. They issued a statement after the release of Rules that said, "The Life is Strange series is a project close to all of our hearts and one for which we do not want to rush development and thereby fail to meet the benchmark of quality and emotional impact that you, our players, deserve. This is why we so far have not announced an official release date [for episode two]".
Life is Strange's second season has been lauded for its handling of timely, political topics in the midst of a sentimental tale about two brothers. The second episode received some criticism for what was perceived as a slowing down of the plot. While there were bad reviews of the game’s “boring” scenes, the episode also faced comments critiquing the “inconsistent animation.”
Nonetheless, the game continues to do well as fans eagerly await the continuation of this popular series. They can look forward to playing future installments later this year — Episode 4 will release on August 22 and Episode 5 will be out December 3.
