As announced by NIS America, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III is coming to the Switch sometime in Spring 2020. There's no formal release date set, but NIS America did reveal that it would come in the second quarter. The PS4 version of Trails of Cold Steel III is already available in both Japan and the rest of the world. Interestingly, the English Switch release of Trails of Cold Steel III will actually come before the Japanese version, a first for the series. We'll see just how well the port of The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III is when it comes to the Switch next year.
Gamespot got a chance to spend some hands-on time with the port ahead of its eventual release, revealing that the port is locked to 720p and 30fps in both docked and undocked modes. Still, reviews of the PS4 release noted some technical issues, ones that hopefully will be ironed out with the rerelease. The Switch is also getting a pair of collector's editions, editions that will come with an art book, multiple covers, and more. All versions of the Switch release, limited or otherwise, will also come with all of the DLC for Trails of Cold Steel III.
This pivot towards Western releases of older Falcom games is certainly welcome, but also unsurprising. At this year's Anime Expo, Dualshockers sat down to talk with Falcom President Toshihiro Kondo about his company's catalog of rather traditional RPGs. Specifically, he was asked about PS4 ports of older Trails games that were previously only available through the now-dead Vita. He hinted that should such ports happen, then Falcom would "definitely find a way for people outside of Japan to enjoy them too." Also, when asked about Switch ports, he said that Falcom was in talks with "multiple publishers," but that nothing definitive had been ironed out yet.
With this latest announcement, we've gotten confirmation of at least one existing Switch port. With Falcom's nearly 40-year history of games to choose from, we'll certainly see more ports before long. Until more news comes, we'll have to settle with getting The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III on Switch sometime next spring.
