A premiere date has not yet been set for The Last of Us TV show coming to HBO, but there's one thing we know for certain: it won't be launching in 2022.
TV and Movie adaptations of popular video games are all the rage these days. Aside from bigger properties like the Halo TV show, there are adaptations coming for a wide range of smaller IPs including System Shock, Hunt: Showdown, and Frogger (of all things).
One of the more interesting upcoming shows is based on Naughty Dog's hit PlayStation game The Last of Us. We first heard tell of the adaptation back in early 2020, but there hasn't been much in the way of news since then. Unfortunately, we've now learned that it won't be coming out in 2022.
When is The Last of Us TV Show Release Date?
The Last of Us TV show release date will be sometime in 2023 at the earliest. A more specific release date has not yet been announced.
"[The Last of Us TV Show is] not going to air in 2022 [--] they are still shooting in Canada," HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys said in an interview with Deadline. "I imagine you will see it in [2023.]"
This upcoming show is being written and produced by Craig Mazin who is most recently known for his work on the 2019 HBO mini-series Chernobyl. Mazin has also served as one of the writers for the upcoming Borderlands movie.
"I have seen some early episodes and I’m very excited,” Bloys added. "Craig [Mazin] did Chernobyl for us, he is a fantastic writer and director. What I’ve seen looks amazing, so I’m excited for it, but it will not be in '22."
While it may be disappointing, it's probably for the best that HBO takes its time in getting the show right. For now, you can get The Last of Us Remastered for just $9.99 or your regional equivalent on the PlayStation Store right now, a 50% discount that lasts until March 3, 2022. You can also grab the sequel The Last of Us 2 for $39.99.
