Hey, it turns out The Last of Us is a pretty successful franchise. Now, however, we know just how successful it is, thanks to new sales figures released by Naughty Dog. The franchise has managed to sell almost 40 million copies since it debuted in 2013, and Neil Druckmann and his team are nowhere near done with it yet.

Reflecting on the franchise's 10th anniversary, which lands this year, Druckmann says 2023 will be "an important milestone" for The Last of Us. The franchise has managed to sell 37 million copies, and that, according to Druckmann, is sell-through, which refers to the quantity sold to customers rather than just shipped to stores by Sony. Those are impressive numbers indeed.

Of course, it doesn't just stop there. As Druckmann points out, The Last of Us Part I is headed to PC in March, as revealed during last year's Game Awards. There's no word yet on a PC release for The Last of Us Part II, but it's hard to imagine that Sony and Naughty Dog won't want the second part of the saga on Steam once the "first part" (which is actually a remake of the original game) has been released.

The Last of Us Part I's Steam debut later this year will no doubt bolster the franchise's already-impressive sales even further.

There's also the upcoming Last of Us TV show, which premieres in less than two weeks on HBO. The show will likely lead to renewed interest in The Last of Us ahead of Part I's Steam release, so it looks like it's going to be a fertile period for the post-apocalyptic franchise.

In the post announcing The Last of Us' sales figures, Druckmann also says that "some fun surprises" are on the way between now and the actual 10th-anniversary celebrations in June. The developer also provides a sneak peek at some new concept art for the upcoming Last of Us multiplayer title, which doesn't have a release date yet but which we'll learn more about later in the year.

If you've yet to check out The Last of Us in any of its forms, The Last of Us Part I is available right now for PS5, and it's coming to Steam on March 3rd. You can also pick up The Last of Us Part II on PlayStation consoles (it's a PS4 game, but thanks to a PS5 patch released last year, it plays pretty well on PS5 as well).
