Sony's The Last Guardian has become somewhat of a mystery over the last few years since it was first announced back at E3 2009. It was going to be Team Ico's next game, after what is often thought by many people as one of the best games on the PS2, if not one of the best games of all time, Shadow of the Colossus. A game that was so unique and experimental that people were desperate to see what the team would do next.
Sadly it seems The Last Guardian has been caught in development hell for the last few years. After 2009 people were shocked that the game was a no show at 2010's E3. It was shown at The Tokyo Game show that year with an expected release of late 2011.
There does seem to be a glimmer of hope though on the eve on E3 2014 with PlayStation Software Product Development Head for Sony Worldwide Studios America, Scott Rhode posting on his Twitter:
I laughed at this rumor over dinner. The Last Guardian has NOT been cancelled.
It seems Scott Rhode's tweet was in response to IGN claiming the game finally been cancelled.
Some more good evidence that the game is not dead comes from job listings for six positions from Sony in Japan. The translation for the positions are.
1. Gamer Planner
2. Game Production Programmer
3. Motion designer
4. Graphic Designer
5. Effects / Particle Designer
6. Line producer
With it being so long since the games first announcement it would not be out of the question to assume that development for The Last Guardian has been moved to the PlayStation 4.
It seems that no matter how long it's been, Sony are still telling us the game is not dead. Will they show any of the game at this years E3? Even with this news I somehow doubt it. Hopefully more will be revealed at some point and we can at-least find out what happened to this ambitious game.
