Koei Tecmo announced a new Beta Demo for Team Ninja’s Nioh at Gamescom this week. The demo launches for free on the PlayStation store on August 23 and runs until September 6.

Nioh is the highly anticipated action RPG from the creators of Ninja Gaiden (2004) and Hyrule Warriors. Players take on the role of William, a samurai who must defend Japan from invading demons. The game’s high difficulty should be familiar to those who played Ninja Gaiden before it. Nioh mixes an art style inspired by Japanese folklore with an over-the-top an combat system similar to Bloodborne's.

The demo kicks off in the village of Usuki. Those who played the Alpha Demo in April should recognize the level. Team Ninja rewards players of the Alpha with bonus set of starting weapons and additional in-game currency. However, if alpha players don't want to play through it again, they beta will read that they played through the alpha and they can start there.

The new stage introduced in the Beta, titled Nakatsu, takes players through a demon-infested mountain path and cave. Completing the stage rewards the players with the Mark of Strong DLC available at Nioh’s launch. However, players who want a greater challenge can take on the Twilight mission. Here William revisits the previous stages with stronger enemies. Fans that brave this level receive new loot to utilize.

Players may be intimidated by the game’s mechanics but a newly implemented tutorial should ease those worries. Team Ninja promises gameplay balances, new weapons, armor, spells, and combat mechanics for the beta as well as the new levels.

The demo will be the last before Nioh’s launch. While Koei Tecmo has yet to announce the game’s release date, players can soon get their hands on the demo exclusively on PlayStation 4. Nioh will be coming exclusively to the PlayStation 4.
