Kingdom Hearts 3 And Final Fantasy VII Remake Due Within Three Years

Published: May 26, 2017 7:25 PM /

It's only reasonable to expect that Final Fantasy VII Remake would have a long window of time until a solid release date is announced. It appeared during E3 2015, so Kingdom Hearts 3 should come out long before then, right? If President and Representative Director Yosuke Matsuda's recent remarks during a Square Enix financial results meeting are of any indication, it seems both of these anticipated action-RPGs will be alongside each other in development time until completion. In other words, we'll all probably die before we see the end of Sora's adventure and the re-imagining of Cloud's story.

After mentioning the sales of titles like Final Fantasy XV and Rise of the Tomb Raider, Matsuda provided an overview of the balance of Square Enix's blockbuster and "mid-size" titles in 2016 and early 2017 which he compared to the projected releases of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age and Dragon Quest XI for the rest of the year. In regard to the future, he only had this to say.

We plan to launch each of these upcoming titles in the next three years or so.

Well, that's not very informative or confident. Perhaps it speaks for an internal uncertainty about when these heavy-hitting titles will be finished or is a very generalized remark. For all we know, "within three years" could mean that we might see Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy VII Remake in late 2018 or early 2019...if we're being exceptionally optimistic. After all, Tetsuya Nomura, who is the director of both titles, wasn't sure himself when they would be released in an interview with Famitsu earlier this year and his work on what would become Final Fantasy XV stretched out over a decade.

Last year, I didn’t put out much information on either title, but this year I want to show our progress at an event somewhere. The release of the titles themselves have still have a way to go. But there are many titles releasing this year, if you can wait for any 'surprises.'
We're crossing our fingers for some gameplay footage of them both in a matter of weeks for E3 2017. We'll take whatever we can get at this point.

Is the wait for Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy VII Remake going to ever end? From what we've seen of them, what do you like most about the changes and direction they're going in? What do you hope to see at E3 2017? Wait alongside us like Aqua in the Realm of Darkness in the comments section below.
