The King of Fighters games are normally known for their impressive 2D art, this iteration of the series is moving to a 3D art style whilst staying on a 2D plane. The game boasts 50 characters to choose from. Some old familiar faces as well as new ones. Nakoruru, a character from the Samurai Shodown series will be making an appearance in the game a playable fighter.

The 3 on 3 team battles, which is arguably what people think of most when is comes to King of Fighters, are making a return. It will feature a Story Mode, VS Mode and Online play that will allow for 3 on 3 battles between teams of players. There will also be an Online Training Mode that allows new players to be taught by more experienced players.

Changes have been made to some of the mechanics, Climax Cancel allows you to "mix it up with super special moves for the ultimate combo". The New Max Mode lets you "perform exclusive EX special moves". Rush has also been added where you "Mash square to perform combos". These mechanics are highlighted in the Invitation Trailer which can be seen here.

With the last King of Fighters coming out in 2010, SNK seem to be wanting a fresh start with The King of Fighters XIV having a new art direction as well as the ability for novice player to learn from more experienced players.

The King of Fighters XIV will be out for the PlayStation 4 on August 23rd and published by Atlus internationally.
