kim to the green

We recently featured Kim on our weekly column, To the Green, where it had yet to be greenlit on Steam. That has changed and now Kim will be available for Early Access March of 2016. Kim is also still currently on Kickstarter with 41 days to go as of today.

Kim is an adventure game with some top down combat and stealth gameplay mixed in set in 19th century British ruled India. The world, characters, situations, and more are based on Rudyard Kipling's Kim, which many consider to be his greatest work. Using the novel as the groundwork for 19th century India players will explore should allow for a detailed look at what life was like at that point in history.

It's worth noting that Kim is not a singular play-through, linear campaign to retell the story of Kipling's novel chapter by chapter. Instead, players will get to explore and experience the world in many different ways as they playthrough several times attempting to achieve the best score they can in a game that is utilizing procedural generation. Achieving that score will offer some interesting philosophical and moral dilemmas, with some of the score dependent on various character's opinion of you coming into play and more.

In any case, fans of interesting writing and those that enjoy history should certainly give Kim a look. Take a look at our To the Green piece for more information on the game. It enters Early Access in March 2016; there are no details when we should be looking at a full release.

Quick Take

If you take a look at the To the Green piece I wrote for Kim, there is no doubt that I am certainly in the camp that is interested in playing the game. It's a refreshing idea that take s a look at a culture that very, very few games look at whatsoever—and that's not even mentioning the historical aspect of it either. It would be neat to see more games "risk" going against the grain, particularly those with larger budgets, as I think we would all benefit from exposure to the unfamiliar, especially when it comes to understanding the world just a little bit better.
