10tons has been more than busy the past couple years releasing a barrage of interesting games. While they've ventured into some more casual releases, the studio is probably best known for their lineup of top down shooters. Starting with the legendary (in some circles) Crimsonland, they've gone on to tap into the roguelike craze with Neon Chrome. Now, the developers are preparing to launch a follow-up set in the same universe that focuses more on the action and begs players to scream about betraying the law. This is JYDGE.

10tons have described JYDGE as a "roguehate" set in the Neon Chrome universe, and they're serious about that moniker. The game features handcrafted levels but randomized weapon mods and augmentations, which puts the procedural generation in the character you play as rather than the arenas you play through. This will give the game a bit more of an arcade vibe, hopefully striking a balance between the two games that came before. Either way, veterans of their previous shooters will almost assuredly find a lot to like here.

JYDGE is scheduled to debut later this Fall on Steam, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. If you want to help make that a reality, you can head over to the game's Steam Greenlight page and vote for it.

Quick Take

I liked Neon Chrome a lot more than most people, so I'm thrilled to see a new game set in the same universe. I'm also thrilled to see developers experimenting with using procedural generation as a tool rather than the crux of a game's design. I've always said that roguelikes are the natural progress of the arcade games of yore, and expanding on those concepts while focusing back in on a well-designed completable package rather than an endless loot grind could really turn some heads.

Also, who doesn't love Judge Dredd?
