It Takes Two sales 1 million cover

It looks like Hazelight's newest co-op game is a hit — It Takes Two sales have crossed 1 million copies in less than a month, showing that there's definitely a market for co-op games.

It Takes Two tells the tale of Cody and May, a married couple that's moving towards a divorce. They tell the heartbreaking news to their daughter Rose and that's when their little girl makes a wish — she wants her parents to try to fix their relationship. The Book of Love hears her plea and transforms the couple into their daughter's handmade dolls, setting off an epic adventure that takes place throughout their home and the surrounding land.

Despite having a pretty cool variety of gameplay, it looks like It Takes Two was a bit of a slow burn; it had a peak of 12,526 players in its launch month. Surprisingly, that number has gone up by over 50% over the last month. Now, the fruits of Hazelight's labor have been revealed: It Takes Two sales have crossed one million units according to a tweet from Hazelight.

"Wow!!! Just found out [It Takes Two] has sold over 1 million copies and is still going strong!" read a tweet from Hazelight Studios. "Thank you so much for all the love you’ve shown our game, it means the world to us[!]"

It Takes Two Sales Show There Are 'Definitely' Players Who Love Co-Op Games

One of the key reasons It Takes Two sales are so surprising has to do with the nature of the game: much like A Way OutIt Takes Two is a game that can only be played in co-op. With co-op games like Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime not having the best of sales at launch, there was certainly a concern that the co-op requirement might limit its appeal and impact its sales — but it looks like it's managed to do pretty well anyway.

"This shows that there definitely [are] players that also [want] to play [co-op-only] games!" the game's Writer and Director Josef Fares said on Twitter. "Thank you everyone and I hope we see more game like this[.]"

Despite the co-op challenges, It Takes Two makes it pretty darn easy to play with a friend or significant other. You only need to buy a single copy of the game to play it with two people thanks to a "Friend Pass" that lets the second player join your game without owning a copy themselves. There's also the fact that, from what I've seen, it has a pretty great variety of gameplay and a charming story.

With 1 million It Takes Two sales, it looks like more and more people are realizing that Hazelight might have just created something special. You can buy It Takes Two for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox (and play it with a friend for free!) for just $39.99 or your regional equivalent.
