The Insurgency: Sandstorm Operation: Breakaway update has arrived, bringing with it a new map, a new game mode, and several new guns for players of this military first-person shooter to enjoy.

Insurgency: Sandstorm isn't quite your average military first-person shooter. Many shooters in the genre tend to aim for thrilling experiences that emphasize action over realism, but the developers behind this game wanted to keep a focus on close-quarters, tactical gameplay. Trying to do your best Rambo impression and running off on your own is a fast way to get killed — especially with some new weapons of war entering the mix.

Check out the Insurgency: Sandstorm Operation: Breakaway Update Trailer to see some of the fun new toys in action!

What's New in the Insurgency: Sandstorm Operation: Breakaway Update?

The first major addition in the Insurgency: Sandstorm Operation Breakaway update is a new map. "Tell" is a reimagining of a classic from the original 2014 game which promises tight, close-quarters combat unlike anything you've seen in the game thus far. Tell supports the following game modes:

  • Push
  • Domination
  • Firefight
  • Checkpoint
  • Hardcore Checkpoint
  • Outpost

The last item on that list notes another big new addition: the Outpost game mode, also a throwback to the original 2014 game. Outpost has players working together to defend against a total of 7 waves of enemies while only having a limited amount of supply points. Enemies will get better equipped as time goes on, and later waves and spawn unique enemies that will suppress players with machine-gun fire or throw an absurd amount of grenades. Outpost can be played on the following maps:

  • Tell
  • Crossing
  • Ministry
  • Hillside
  • Outskirts
  • Power Plant

Also arriving in the Insurgency: Sandstorm Operation: Breakaway update is a series of new guns for players to use. The AUG A3 and FAMAS F1 give players two more options for assault rifles, but those aren't the only new weapons on the way.

Underslung shotguns will arrive as part of this update, too. These weapon attachments will give players more options for close-quarters combat, with the Buckshot Launcher, in particular, being described by the developers as "basically a tactical blunderbuss." Here are the new underslung shotgun attachments and which guns they can be attached to:

  • M26 MASS – M16A4, M4A1, AUG A3
  • Buckshot Launcher – AKM, AK0-74
  • Masterkey – M16A4, M4A1, AKM, AK-74, and FAMAS F1

Three new foregrips will provide further tactical options for players. The Aiming Grip lets you use ADS faster, the Loading Grip allows you to reload your weapon faster, and the Quick Draw Grip allows you to draw and put away your Primary weapon faster.

These are just some of the many new additions coming to the game; be sure to read the full Insurgency: Sandstorm Operation: Breakaway update patch notes for all of the changes making their debut today.
