Insurgency: Sandstorm, the upcoming sequel to the realism-oriented first-person shooter Insurgency, has had its single-player and cooperative story campaigns canceled for the game’s release according to a Community Update from Lead Game Designer Michael Tsarouhas on the game’s official website.

The game is set to be an updated and improved version of Insurgency, a first-person shooter with a focus on realism over arcade-style gameplay. The sequel will have a number of improvements over its predecessor including a number of driveable vehicles and competitive matchmaking. Insurgency: Sandstorm was originally planned to have a single-player and cooperative campaign on release, but it appears that those plans have been shelved for the time being. In a comprehensive message to the community, Mr. Tsarouhas stated that the team behind the game would like to focus on delivering a quality multiplayer experience in 2018 and the “high production requirements” of a single-player campaign would make that somewhat difficult.

Aside from the news about the campaign, the modes for online play have been listed. Versus will have Push, Firefight, and Capture the Base as game modes, and Co-op will have Checkpoint, Operation, and Outpost. Push and Firefight will not have drivable vehicles as the developers intend to keep it closer to the previous game’s style, but Capture The Base will have them as its a more open-map style of play designed for vehicles from the outset.

The Mac & Linux versions of the game have also been tabled for now so that the developers can focus on bringing the game to the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Insurgency: Sandstorm is set to release sometime in 2018. If you’d like to participate in the Closed Alpha for the game you can sign up here.

What do you think of Insurgency: Sandstorm canceling their campaign for the game’s release? Do you think they should delay the title until the single-player campaign is ready or is the multiplayer the most important part of the game? Let us know in the comments below!
