Games taking the idea of a cult seriously are pretty rare. Generally, we see takes more on the parody end, in Lovecraftian horror, or used a term for religion in certain settings. The Church in the Darkness promised none of that, instead opting to ground itself in the modern-day and showcases cults in a way that hasn't been tried before.

In The Church in the Darkness, you play as Vic, an ex-cop who's attempting to rescue his nephew Alex from a cult that has moved to the South American jungle from the United States. Rebecca and Isaac Walker run Freedom Town, and it's up to you to find their motivations, plans and decide how you want to deal with it. Do you want to rescue Alex? Kill all the cultists? Opt to join the cult? There are multiple endings for each scenario in The Church in the Darkness, also taking into account your playstyle, and each time you play the scenario changes.

Previously announced for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, publisher Fellow Traveller is happy to announce that a Nintendo Switch port will also join in when The Church in the Darkness releases August 2nd. Players can pick up the Standard edition for $20 or the True Believer Special Edition for $30. This bonus edition includes the official soundtrack and a series of behind-the-scenes videos about the making of The Church in the Darkness. Additionally, both versions will be 20% off for the first week as part of a launch discount.

Quick Take

The Church in the Darkness grabbed attention with its unique premise and intriguing gameplay at the time of its announcement. While I don't typically play many stealth games, this one has certainly caught my eye. When The Church in the Darkness releases August 2nd I figure there's a decent chance I'll be playing.
