2D indie sci-fi game Orphan is set to release on PC on October 31st. Originally crowdfunded by a Kickstarter campaign back in 2015, Orphan tells the story of a young boy who may (or may not) be the sole survivor of an invasion by alien machines. Seeking to use the cover of darkness to his advantage, he sets out at night in search of other life forms, hoping to gain revenge on the aliens that have ravaged the world of Appalachia.

Orphan is a cinematic platformer, described as a Metroidvania, developed by Brandon Goins, of the one-man indie studio Windy Hill, based out of Tennessee. The game has been in development since 2014 and is to be published by 2Dimensions. Out of the $32,000 goal, $36,888 was pledged by 1,146 backers to bring this project to life. Despite the extended development period, Windy Hill has been continuously sending out progress updates to backers and the launch trailer for the game was released on August 27th.

The game’s silhouette art style is reminiscent of Limbo, but judging by the trailers, a great focus is placed on the action-adventure parts of gameplay – that is, fighting the alien menace. Appalachia contains a variety of locations for your young protagonist to venture through, from caverns and mines to power stations and skydecks, with no two looking exactly alike.

Orphan will be available on Steam and Gog, with future releases planned for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One but no current timeframes announced for those platforms. The Kickstarter campaign also indicated the game would be released for Mac and Linux but no release date has been announced for either of these.

If you'd like to learn a bit more about Orphan and Brandon Goins the man behind it all then be sure to check out our interview with him from 2015 back when the game had first hit Kickstarter.

Are you excited to explore the wide, wonderful and slightly dark world of Appalachia? Getting vibes like Invasion of the Tripods or is this going to fill the void in your soul left after completing Limbo? Let us know in the comments below!
