Indie Interview - Christopher Park of Arcen Games

Published: July 26, 2016 12:00 PM /

It's always a lot of fun to be able to sit down and talk with a developer in-depth on their projects and the industry, and I recently had the opportunity to do that with Christopher Park of Arcen Games. With the early access release of their newest game, In Case of Emergency Release Raptor, today (it was delayed from the 21st to today), this may give you some insight into one of the more interesting indie business stories there.

Arcen Games has gone between nearly bankrupt to indie darling and everything in-between. Earlier this year, the critically acclaimed Starward Rogue was released, but it was a commercial flop for them. We talked about that and how the industry has worked, as well as other things like the Unity engine and what responsible uses of assets are, as their newest game is making some use of Unity's.

We also talked a lot about In Case of Emergency, Release Raptor, which is coming out, including how they handle the procedural generation for the game, some of the challenges in using a Raptor as the main character, what can cause delays in game design, and why Christopher wanted to make this game. The main reason apparently is he felt there was no game that fit the feeling of letting you be the velociraptor, something we here at TechRaptor can definitely sympathize with.

The interview clocks in at around 90 minutes, so I hope you enjoy it, and we'll have a preview coming for the game as well.

Note: we mention there about a July 21st release. It had been delayed to the 26th between the recording of the interview and today.
