The Kickstarter campaign for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was funded in June 2015, achieving the impressive sum of $5.5 million in crowdfunding pledges. Additional crowdfunding lasted until May 2018. It also introduced the term "Igavania," which the developers defined as "a gothic, exploration-focused action platformer, designed by one of the godfathers of the genre," namely Koji Igarashi, often credited as Iga. He was a lead developer on the classic Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in 1997, then went on to become a Konami veteran and lead producer of the Castlevania series in the 2000s. His last credit in the Castlevania series was a producer on Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. Now, the Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night release date has been announced.

After he left Konami in 2014, Igarashi tried to establish himself as an independent developer, which led up to the Kickstarter campaign for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night as well as the companion title Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. Now Italian publisher 505 Games announces the release date for the gothic horror side-scrolling action RPG for June 18, and it will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC both on Steam and GOG. They also announced plans to release digitally for the Nintendo Switch on June 25.

The new trailer for the release date announcement showcases a wealth of technological advancements that the game achieved in the last year of development, particularly the fluid controls, enhanced lighting and graphics, and the newly composed score by composer Michiru Yamane of the original Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is set in 18th century England, where a paranormal force has summoned a demon-infested castle, revealing crystal shards infused with magical powers. You'll take on the role of Miriam, an orphan girl, scarred by an alchemist curse which slowly crystalizes her body. To save yourself, you must fight through the castle as you collect and craft an array of weapons, equipment, and loot to defeat the summoner Gebel.
