Blizzard's take on the MOBA genre, Heroes of the Storm has entered open beta, allowing people to play it for free. The game had been in closed beta since January, meaning you had to receive an invite from Blizzard or purchase the Founder's Pack for $40, which included a beta invite along with some other in-game content.
Along with this announcement Blizzard have released a new trailer.
The "online team brawler", as Blizzard describes it, features characters from throughout Blizzards many franchises such as characters from Warcraft and Starcraft. They even go as far back as the SNES and Genesis classic The Lost Vikings from 1992. They describe it as "a fresh take on the team brawler" with an emphasis on team play as players work together to "overcome each battleground’s unique challenges". This and the fact that Heroes of the Storm has multiple maps to play on will be decisive factors on whether Blizzard can make the game stand out amongst the likes of the already established League of Legends and Dota 2.
Blizzard did have a few things to say about the game going into open beta.
Kindly keep in mind that Open Beta is still not final release, and we will be closely monitoring the game to ensure a positive play experience for everyone. Should one-too-many brawlers try to cram through the Nexus Portal at once, you may encounter a queue when attempting to log in to the client. Not to worry, however, as the wait should be brief, and you’ll be back to crushing opponents in no time.Earlier this month came the announcement of a Heroes of the Storm world championship. It is to be an international tournament, featuring teams from all around the world.
The final release of Heroes of the Storm is set for June 2nd.
