Recent releases of the Heroes of Might and Magic series have been more mixed in how they were received, but everyone remembers the most famous of all - Heroes of Might and Magic 3. This was the game that got this series known for classic strategy, spawned two expansions, a specialty campaign line and tons and tons of homebrewed maps and scenarios.

That's why its time for it to make a come back! As all company's seem to be doing recently, Ubisoft reached into the vault, pulled out an HD touch-up brush, and began to make plans to release the Heroes of Might and Magic 3 HD. The Heroes of Might and Magic 3 HD will only be containing Restoration of Erathia though, as Ubisoft explains that New World Computing had lost the source code to the rest.

Community team note: But why only RoE? To understand the origin of the project and its development we need to go back to 2003. At that time we asked New World Computing to retrieve their archives for all the Might & Magic titles. We found tons of documentation and data but regarding Heroes III we had nothing but the usable source code of Heroes III Restoration of Erathia.
Beyond just getting a complete HD touch-up though there are two exciting pieces of news here. The first is that Android and iOS tablets will also be able to play this - which sounds like a wonderful thing for them. As it is a turnbased game that can go on for a while, Heroes makes a lot of sense to be on tablets. Its lower amount of graphics and animations make it not too straining on the system as well.

However, unlike many times, PC users are not being left out in the dust here. Heroes of Might and Magic 3 will have Steamworks integrated and a new online multiplayer lobby for pc players.

It will be released on January 29th 2015 on all 3 platforms, though no price has been announced. There is of course a trailer which you can see which shows some of the art process.

What do you think of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 getting an HD upgrade? What do you think of companies doing so many HD remasterings of older games? What do you think of so many company's losing code of old programs?
