Techland has announced that Dying Light would be receiving some new DLC in the form of Hellraid, their long-delayed title that is seemingly dead now.
The DLC starts with an arcade machine that Dying Light survivors found in the Tower's basement while investigating a power outage. It's a device that none of them remember ever seeing before. So, they moved it upstairs, unaware of the sinister nature behind it.
The game will have players explore a new dungeon area with new weapons and facing enemies that look more out of Diablo then regular zombies. Players can also play this alone or in co-op.
Originally, Hellraid was originally announced all the way back in 2012 as Project Hell and reannounced as Hellraid in 2013. was supposed to be a first-person hack and slasher with co-op and singleplayer modes, with online running up to four people.
It looked and sounded pretty neat, but Techland could never get it to work properly, putting it on hold in 2015 due to them coming to "... the conclusion that Hellraid, in its current shape and form, is not meeting our own expectations for this project." They also stated that it was going to go back to the "drawing board", although it looks as though all of their attempts to reinvent the title as its own singular game was unsuccessful, leading to it eventually becoming Dying Light DLC.
What's interesting (besides the fact that Hellraid is now almost certainly dead) is that this may be a reaction to earlier news that Dying Light 2 was delayed indefinitely earlier this year. With no Dying Light 2, Techland may have scrambled to come up with something--anything--to help fill the void that Dying Light 2 left behind by not releasing this year. It's not coming out in Fall, which would definitely be a better time to release this, but considering Dying Light 2 was supposed to come out this Spring, it makes a lot more sense that the Hellraid DLC is coming out a little earlier.
Dying Light - Hellraid is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One this summer. If you want to check it out on Steam, go here.
