Roguelike dungeon crawler Hashtag Dungeon is being removed from Steam after several years of developer inactivity. This roguelite dungeon crawler attracted a measure of success, but the team behind the game had eventually moved on to different careers. Now, they're disbanding their game development company Hitpoint Games, consequently removing their only game from the Steam Store along with it.
Hashtag Dungeon is a dungeon crawler with some roguelike elements baked into it. There are plenty of games out there with this kind of setup, but the special sauce for this particular title is in the name: it made use of Twitter to procedurally generate the dungeons.
Unfortunately, several things have happened in the last couple of years that changed the fate of this game. To start, Hashtag Dungeon was a university project for the developers, both of whom had moved on to separate careers shortly afterward. They were able to be in contact with one another less often, further complicating their ability to work on the game.
Moreover, the main gimmick of the game — using Twitter to generate dungeons — had broken at an unknown point in the last two years, effectively rendering the online portion of the game wholly non-functional.
Hitpoint Games state in a news post on the game's Steam Community page that they would have been more than willing to leave the game up, but it would require more work to get it fixed up than they are able to commit to. As a result, they've begun the process of removing it permanently from the platform.
"If we could continue to support the game forever, we would, but it turns out that once you leave university you get a lot of responsibilities on your plate and neither of us can continue to spin this plate as well as all our others."Hashtag Dungeon will disappear from the Steam Store at some point in the near future. Current owners should be able to access the game from their library on Steam after its removal as is standard. If you'd like to grab it before it's gone for good, you can get it on Steam at a price of $2.99 or your regional equivalent."Thank you for playing the game over the last few years. It was an amazing experience for us to have a game on Steam, to go to events and show it off and to see people playing it. Unfortunately, nothing good in life lasts forever, and videogames are sadly no exception." — Sean & Kieran, Hitpoint Games
