I’ve long wondered why there isn’t a Harry Potter RPG enabling you to create your own character and experience Hogwarts. The idea is something myself and even my non-gaming Potter-head friends often discuss, as it seems like a natural progression for the franchise. This morning, as if the game development witches and wizards finally heard our conversations, footage of such an RPG was leaked by user “VapeThisBro” on Reddit.

While the original video was taken down by Warner Bros., mirror uploads showcase an in-depth character creator, Potions class, favorite spells like Lumos, and gorgeous, third-person battles within the famed Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Unlike the micro-transaction laden Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery mobile title from earlier this year, this new game looks to be a proper evolution of the classic Harry Potter games from the PlayStation 2 era.

You can probably recreate Daniel Radcliffe with the depth of these customization options.

Alongside the video leak, VapeThisBro posted a description of the game with a feature list:

“Set in the 19th Century (1800's) Wizarding World, this 3rd person open-world action RPG game centers around your character with unique abilities who has eared(sic) a late acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There’s reason to believe that Avalanche Software (former Disney Infinity developer - not the Just Cause team, Avalanche Studios) is behind the title. The team was closed in 2016 after the Disney Infinity cancellation, but Warner Bros. Interactive quickly purchased them.

Since then, a NeoGaf post from 2017 dug up some Avalanche job postings regarding a “talented storyteller with a deep understanding of British culture and grammatical presentation,” among other prospects. Of course, if the hirings were only last year, we probably still have a while to go before release, assuming Avalanche is the developer. In fact, it’s possible this game could be one of the first next-gen titles we see.

Plus, let’s not forget about Portkey Games, the Harry Potter gaming label set up by Warner Bros. for “publishing a range of mobile and console Harry Potter titles,” revealed by a Pottermore post from last year. As of now, only the Hogwarts Mystery title mentioned above has been published under the branding. Pokemon Go developer Niantic is also working on a mobile title called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

While the developer isn’t confirmed, we at least know the footage is no hoax. As reported by Eurogamer, BBC News reporter Lizo Mzimba tweeted his official confirmation of the existence of the game alongside some potential names:

Hopefully, we’ll be seeing more of this new entry into the Potter universe soon. It’s been a long while since a substantial game in the franchise, and we’ve never seen one of this caliber before.

What do you think of the leaked footage? Do you think the title will be a current-gen or next-gen game? What is your favorite Harry Potter game? Let us know in the comments below!
