Who says Valve doesn't work on games anymore? Two games, both of which are nearly twenty years old, received some updates from Valve today. Both the much-beloved Half-Life and Counter-Strike 1.6 were updated with many fixes for crashes, bugs, and other issues.

Half-Life's update is less substantial than Counter-Strike's, with just a few bugs that caused crashes getting fixed. What's neat to see here, though, is Valve still pays attention to the community that still plays and mods the game. The last time Half-Life received an update was back in September of 2013, which was the final in many series of updates for Half-Life and Counter-Strike 1.6. Back in January of 2013, Valve announced Half-Life would be coming to Mac and Linux, so the game received a lot of attention and updates to get the game prepared for the platforms.

The story for Counter-Strike 1.6 is similar. Both it and Half-Life were announced for Mac and Linux in January of 2013 and they both received a bunch of updates throughout the year. Now, the game received an update fixing several crashes and other bugs, which is not surprising considering Counter-Strike 1.6 is still played by quite a few people today. According to Steam, for example, Counter-Strike 1.6 peaked at near 20,000 people playing today, which is not unusual.

The two are historic games of very well-known franchises, so it's not too surprising to see Valve paying attention to games that have helped build their company.

Quick Take

It's neat to see Valve give some attention to old games, but I know most people would love some news from whatever new projects they are working on. No doubt the Half-Life 3 jokes are coming. Counter-Strike 1.6 is really no surprise to get updates seeing how popular it still is for how old of a game it is. There's even a pretty competitive eSports scene around the game as well, which is also cool considering how it was an early eSports pioneer.

Do you still play Half-Life now and again? Are you one of those staunch Counter-Strike 1.6 players who say its the best version of the game? Let us know in the comments below!
