Polish developer CD Projekt RED have announced the first official tournament based around GWENT: The Witcher Card Game. This card game originally made its debut in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but managed to become a fan favorite and because of its success, CDPR decided to redesign it as a standalone.
It’s a real privilege to observe how active GWENT players are in the realm of competitive gaming. Communitypowered tournaments like The Passiflora Championship, The Seven Cats Brawl or The Gwentlemen’s Open are a source of inspiration for the entire team, and we definitely want this part of GWENT to grow.This tournament will pit 4 players against each other for a total prize pool of $100,000. That price is nothing to sneeze at, and neither are any of the four contestants:Paweł Burza, Community Manager, CD PROJEKT RED.
Trump (Jeffrey Shih): This might be a familiar name to you if you like to watch Hearthstone streams. He's already one of the best Hearthstone players in North America, so another competitive card game like GWENT seems right up his alley. Shih currently plays for Team Tempo Storm.
Lifecoach (Adrian Koy): Koy is a noteworthy E-athlete who has managed to win quite a few professional Hearthstone tournaments like the Dreamhack Hearthstone Competition and the 2016 SeatStory Cup V. He's been a part of G2 Esports since 2015.
Noxious (Kacem Khilaji): This Canadian player also cut his competitive CCG teeth on Blizzard's Hearthstone (I'm sensing a pattern here) who, while not in the possession of any 1st place trophy, nevertheless performs well enough to be included in this tournament. Khilaji has been with compLexity Gaming since 2014.
ppd (Peter Dager): Peter Dager is an American DOTA 2 player who founded the Evil Geniuses eSports team. Under his tutelage his team managed to win The International 2015, earning him and his team 6 million dollars in prize money, making him one of the most wealthy eSports players active right now.
But that's not all! If you want a chance to play against some of the very best in eSports, you can go here to sign up for the qualifiers. You have until the 22nd of March to apply. Do note that you won't be able to sign up for the tournament if you don't have a GOG account with access to GWENT: The Witcher Card Game's closed beta.
Applicants apply for one of two divisions, Temeria or Redania, each with a different time zone focus. The top 256 ratings as of the end of sign ups in each division are invited to the first stage of the competition which is held online. The finals will be held in Poland with 2 players from each division advancing.
The 4 players who manage to qualify will be playing against the 4 professional gamers. Best of luck to those thinking about giving it a go!
