Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator-

The second iteration of the Guilt Gear Xrd series was announced for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 yesterday by publisher ArkSys games. Whilst the game has been available in Japanese arcades since August, this is Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-'s home console debut. Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- will be released in North America and Japan Spring 2016 for PS4 and PS3.

The game will introduce a 'stylish mode', which is a mode seen in a number of Japanese fighting game that provides a more basic play-style for new players in order to ease them into the game and its mechanics. This generally eliminates high level execution seen in harder combos and allows players to merely bash buttons for big combos.

Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- updates the line up from Guilty Gear XRD -SIGN-'s 17 characters with 4 additions for a total of 21 at launch. Johnny, the edgy sword wielding captain of a pirate fleet filled with questionably aged girls, focuses on long range pokes and combo resets.

Joining him as returnees from previous games are Jam Kuradoberi and Dizzy. Jam debuted in Guilty Gear X and is a young chef who is one of the most offensive characters in Guilty Gear with insane speed and command dashes.

Dizzy makes her return by popular acclaim, after winning a fan vote in October, and thus you may note is absent in the video above.

Guilty Gear Xrd Jack'O

Jack'O is a brand new contestant in the Guilty Gear franchise having made her debut this summer in the arcade version, sporting her black and green pumpkin head and a rather insane moveset which boasts command grabs, minion summons that can also be detonated and air projectiles.

Quick Take

Unlike many devoted fighting game fans, I have yet to jump in on Guilty Gear Xrd. Having only really played Guilty Gear X2 reloaded, the rock and roll theme and the astounding 2D styled models has intrigued me. I feel like this addition, with the introduction of classic characters and being an established game, should sway many who were on the fence about picking up the original Xrd. However, with a release date close to the release of Street Fighter 5, Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- will probably have a hard time selling well against that giant franchise. Street Fighter V is set to launch on February 16, so it is possible that launching towards the end of spring could avoid some of the competition.
