Rockstar appears to be getting ready to release the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition package on Steam and the Epic Games Store. A new update to the Rockstar Games Launcher shows code strings indicating IDs for the three games in the trilogy on both storefronts.

This news comes from Rockstar news source @videotech_, also known as Ben, on Twitter. Ben points out that a recent update to the Rockstar Games Launcher shows Epic IDs for games with the tags "gta3unreal", "gtavcunreal", and "gtasaunreal", which appear to refer to the Trilogy.

Another image was posted alongside the above showing Steam IDs for the games as well, with their names on full display. Trying to visit the Steam pages for these IDs simply returns you to the Steam homepage at time of writing, so nothing's official yet. However, this seems like pretty compelling evidence that the trilogy is on its way to Steam and Epic soon.

Not everyone will be thrilled to see the return of the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition on Steam and Epic.

If the Steam and Epic versions of the GTA Trilogy are indeed incoming, you'd be forgiven for approaching this news with concern rather than glee. After all, the trilogy had a notably terrible launch, with numerous bugs clogging up each of the three games, many of which weren't even present in the original versions.

That was compounded by some leftover game files at launch that contained music cut due to licensing issues, which led to the game's temporary removal from PC shortly after release. Suffice it to say that Rockstar has an uphill battle if it wants to restore the reputation of the GTA Trilogy in the hearts and minds of fans. Hopefully, this version will launch alongside a hefty update that fixes the game's issues, since the one back in late November last year doesn't seem to have rectified the problems completely.

We're likely to see an announcement for the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition Steam and Epic releases during the upcoming Game Awards ceremony on Thursday. In the meantime, if you want to, you can still buy the trilogy on PC via the Rockstar Launcher and on consoles as well.
