No video game franchise is safe from the battle royale fad - five years after its initial release, Grand Theft Auto V is still seeing updates to its Online component, the latest addition is that of a new Adversary mode called ‘Trap Door,’ discounts and bonuses accompanying the release.

The new ‘Trap Door’ mode sits alongside other GTA Online Adversary Modes such as ‘The Vespucci Job’ and ‘Hardest Target,’ and takes the form of a battle royale variant, with two teams facing off on a rapidly shrinking platform high above the Pacific Ocean.

Similarities to other battle royale contests, such as Fortnite and PUBG, are few, despite the battle royale comparisons. Teams are small, with no aspirations to the 100-player deathmatches of other games, contests taking place over the course of several rounds, and death is far from final. A killed player is dropped into the ‘red zone,’ which they have a few seconds to escape before they are eliminated altogether.

This system replaces conventional battle royale teammate revivals, placing the player’s second chance in their own hands, rather than those of untrustworthy strangers, and is an interesting alteration to the established battle royale formula. Rockstar’s continual commitment to Grand Theft Auto V is little surprise, given the massive financial success the game has seen with over 80 million copies sold and the online component is a massive cash cow for Take Two. Rolling out with this mode are opportunities to earn masses of in-game currency and spend it on discounted online goods.

This isn't the first time that GTA Online has turned to the Battle Royale genre for inspiration. In 2017, RockStar added Motor Wars, an adversary mode which took the Battle Royale idea in a different direction by turning it into a vehicular battle royale. Like Trap Door it was an adversary mode and was team-based, meaning there's no solo play experience if you want to try them out - only duos and larger.

The ‘Trap Door’ mode will earn players double GTA$ and RP until May 21. This update also allows players to earn double GTA$ and RP in Biker Business Sell Missions and Double GTA$ in Smuggler’s Run Sell Missions for the following week. Discounts to a swathe of vehicles and weapons are also rolling out with this update.

With Rockstar releasing the Grand Theft Auto V: Premium Online Edition recently and Red Dead Redemption 2 dropping in October and sure to incorporate online features of its own, Rockstar seems committed to maintaining and expanding the online components of their games.
